Acclaimed Star Wars author Alexander Freed returns to the galaxy far, far away with his latest novel, Star Wars: The Mask of Fear ("Reign of the Empire"), set to release on February 25, 2025, from Del Rey Books. In a recent interview with Space.com’s Jeff Spry, Freed offered insight into the novel’s exploration of the galaxy’s transformation under the newly formed Empire—and how few people actually realize the danger they are in.

“No one really knows that the Emperor is evil,” Freed explained, emphasizing how Palpatine’s rise to power was met with compliance rather than resistance. The novel follows key figures such as Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Saw Gerrera as they begin to uncover the sinister truth behind the Empire’s growing influence. With its 496-page narrative, The Mask of Fear delves into the paranoia, deception, and political maneuvering that set the stage for the Rebellion.

Freed, known for his work on Star Wars: Battlefront: Twilight Company, the Rogue One novelization, and the Alphabet Squadron trilogy, has built a reputation for gritty, character-driven storytelling. His latest book promises a tense political thriller exploring how the seeds of resistance were planted.

Fans eager to see how the Rebel Alliance first took shape can pre-order The Mask of Fear now. For more details, check out the full interview with Jeff Spry at Space.com.
