‘Light and Magic’ Season 2 Premieres April 18 on Disney+

The long-awaited second season of Light and Magic, the documentary series chronicling the groundbreaking work of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), will premiere on Disney+ on April 18. Unlike the first season, which was directed by Lawrence Kasdan, the new installment is helmed by ILM legend Joe Johnston.

Johnston confirmed to Collider that Season 2 will pick up after the era of Jurassic Park and explore ILM’s innovations throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s. The series won’t follow a strict chronological order but will highlight key moments in visual effects history. Of particular interest to Star Wars fans, the new season will delve into the making of the prequel trilogy, showcasing how George Lucas and ILM pushed technology forward to bring those films to life.

Beyond Star Wars, the documentary will also feature behind-the-scenes footage and interviews about Twister, Casper, Pirates of the Caribbean, and War of the Worlds. Discussing ILM’s history of innovation, Johnston remarked, “Every time ILM is given a challenge, they figure out how to do it and that advances their abilities and techniques for the next film to come along.”

The announcement of Season 2 caught fans by surprise, as Johnston casually mentioned wrapping filming back in October 2023—before the project had even been officially revealed. With Andor Season 2 debuting just five days later, April is shaping up to be an exciting month for Star Wars and ILM enthusiasts alike.
