The Star Wars saga has inspired generations of filmmakers, and now, another acclaimed director has joined the ranks of those who found their creative spark in a galaxy far, far away. French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, whose latest film The Substance has earned five Academy Award nominations—including Best Picture—recently reflected on how Star Wars played a pivotal role in her journey to becoming a director.

A resurfaced 1993 fan film, La Guerre des Étoiles, made by a 17-year-old Fargeat, showcases her early passion for storytelling. Shared by Letterboxd, the short film recreates scenes from Return of the Jedi using action figures and homemade costumes, all shot on a camcorder with stop-motion animation and VHS editing techniques.

Reflecting on the project, Fargeat described it as the moment she knew she wanted to be a filmmaker. “It was such an amateur endeavor, but everything I loved about making films was already there… It was the place where I felt free, passionate, and alive,” she wrote. Now, as she stands among the nominees for Best Director, she encourages aspiring storytellers to follow their dreams.

With her growing acclaim, could Fargeat one day direct an official Star Wars film? Time will tell. For now, all eyes are on the Academy Awards, set to take place on March 2, where The Substance is poised to make an impact.
