With Andor Season 2 set to premiere April 22 on Disney+, creator Tony Gilroy sat down with Empire to reflect on the show’s ambitious journey — and the support that made it possible.
Despite Andor fitting into established Star Wars canon, its heavier tone and grounded storytelling have made it a standout within the franchise. Gilroy credited the success of The Mandalorian and the support of Lucasfilm and Disney leadership, including Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Iger, for allowing Andor to take bold creative risks.

“Andor will never happen again,” Gilroy said. “Not because we are so great but because no one’s ever gonna start a show on this scale again, and shoot it practically, and have the resources and protection to do something like this.”
Gilroy also emphasized the important role of fans, noting the show’s strong critical reception, eight Emmy nominations, and passionate audience support. He addressed fan culture head-on, dismissing any notion of rivalry between Andor and other Star Wars series like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
“We don’t have a show without them,” he said of The Mandalorian’s success. “No Baby Yoda, no Andor. Seriously.”
Gilroy’s comments come as a reminder that Star Wars' creative teams are more collaborative than the internet often suggests. As Andor Season 2 approaches, fans can look forward to another chapter of storytelling that challenges, expands, and deepens the galaxy far, far away.
Andor Season 2 premieres April 22 at 6 PM PST on Disney+.
